The Ashland Arrows, wearing all black with pink accessories for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, faced off against Mansfield Senior Tygers, who were clad in white jerseys, black pants, and pink accents, at Ashland Community Stadium in what was a one-sided contest. Coming into the game, Ashland, boasting an undefeated record, was the heavy favorite, while Mansfield Senior struggled at 1-5 overall.
First Quarter:
Ashland’s highly-touted quarterback, Nathan Bernhard (6’5”, 227 lbs, rated 89 by 247Sports), got off to a rocky start when he was intercepted early in the game. The Tygers nearly ran it back for a touchdown but had to settle for a field goal, taking a 3-0 lead. After a Mansfield punt, which pinned Ashland deep at their 2-yard line, the Arrows found themselves in tough field position. But Bernhard turned the game around with an electric 87-yard touchdown run, putting Ashland ahead 7-3 to end the first quarter.
Second Quarter:
Ashland seized control in the second quarter as Bernhard connected with junior wide receiver Dakota Kruty on a touchdown pass, extending the lead to 14-3. Mansfield’s troubles continued when they fumbled the ball, allowing senior Jackson Aber to recover it for Ashland. Bernhard quickly capitalized, linking up with Kruty again for a second touchdown, putting the Arrows up 21-3. Bernhard then added another highlight to his stellar night, breaking off a 55-yard touchdown run to further increase the lead to 27-3. Mansfield had a glimmer of hope with a deep pass to the 20-yard line, but they fumbled again, and Ashland recovered to end the threat. A 48-yard field goal attempt from Ashland near the end of the half missed the mark, leaving the halftime score at 28-3 in favor of the Arrows.
Third Quarter:
Ashland continued to dominate in the second half. Bernhard found senior wide receiver Tyler Sauder in the back of the end zone for another touchdown, making it 34-3. Mansfield managed to get into the red zone but failed to convert, turning the ball over on downs at the 15-yard line. The quarter ended with Ashland firmly in control, leading 35-3.
Fourth Quarter:
As the game wound down, frustrations began to show for Mansfield, with some chippy play emerging. However, Ashland maintained their composure and closed out the game with a convincing 35-3 victory.
