The stage is set for a monumental showdown at the Pro Football Hall of Fame next Friday, where the Hillsdale Falcons will square off against the Marion Local Flyers in the Division 7 State Championship. With the Falcons coming off a thrilling comeback victory over Danville and the Flyers entering with an unblemished 15-0 record, this promises to be an unforgettable contest. Let’s dive into the journey of both teams, their respective playoff runs, and what to expect from this high-stakes finale.
Hillsdale Falcons: A Historic Season
The Hillsdale Falcons, under the leadership of head coach Trevor Cline, have defied the odds all season long. Their 14-1 record heading into the state title game is a testament to their resilience and unrelenting drive. The Falcons’ playoff run has been nothing short of extraordinary, punctuated by a dramatic 25-22 victory over Danville in the state semifinals.
Regular Season and Early Playoff Dominance
Hillsdale’s regular season was a mix of dominant victories and hard-fought battles. They began with a commanding 44-12 win over Black River and followed it up with a string of victories over teams like Lucas, Loudonville, and Chippewa. Their only hiccup came in a 45-21 loss to Norwayne, but they quickly bounced back with a vengeance in the postseason.
In the playoffs, Hillsdale faced increasingly difficult opponents, including Fairport (55-12), Windham (43-14), and Malvern (50-48). However, it was their dramatic comeback against Danville that solidified their place in history. Down 22-6 at halftime, the Falcons scored 19 unanswered points in the second half, capped off by a 10-yard quarterback draw from Kale Lewis that gave them a 25-22 lead. The defense then held firm, securing the win and their first-ever state championship appearance.
Key Players
Kael Lewis: The quarterback has been a standout performer, showcasing his ability to lead under pressure. His poise in the second half against Danville, where he threw a touchdown and then scored on the ground, was crucial in the Falcons’ comeback.
Owen Sloan: A workhorse running back, Sloan’s ability to power through defenses has been pivotal all season.
Hayden McFadden and Brock Bower: Both wide receivers have been clutch targets for Lewis, and McFadden’s 30-yard touchdown catch in the regional final against Cuyahoga Heights was a game-changing moment.
Playoff Highlights
The Miracle in Massillon - The Hillsdale Falcons pulled off an incredible 50-48 victory over Malvern in a Division VII, Region 25 semifinal at Massillon Perry High School. The game featured two Hail Mary passes from Falcons quarterback Kael Lewis—one at the end of the first half and another on the final play of the game. The latter pass was tipped before being caught by junior Hayden McFadden for the game-winning touchdown. The Falcons, led by Owen Sloan’s 285 rushing yards and four touchdowns, will advance to the regional championship to face Cuyahoga Heights. Malvern’s Jared Withrow threw for 418 yards, but it was Hillsdale’s dramatic finish that secured their place in the Elite Eight.
Regional Final vs. Cuyahoga Heights (44-14): Hillsdale’s offense exploded in this game, with Lewis tossing multiple touchdown passes and Sloan adding two more rushing scores. The Falcons’ balanced attack left little room for Cuyahoga Heights to make a comeback.
State Semifinal vs. Danville (25-22): A back-and-forth game that saw Hillsdale erase a 16-point deficit in the second half. Lewis’ leadership and the defense’s timely stops were key to the Falcons’ historic win.
Looking Ahead: The Challenge of Marion Local
Now, Hillsdale faces a monumental challenge in Marion Local, one of the most storied programs in Ohio high school football history. The Flyers enter the state championship with an impressive 63-game win streak and a legacy of excellence that includes 13 state championships. To say they are a juggernaut would be an understatement.
Marion Local Flyers: A Dynasty in the Making
The Marion Local Flyers have been a force to be reckoned with for over a decade, and their dominance in the Division 7 ranks is unparalleled. Under the leadership of head coach Tim Goodwin, the Flyers are seeking their fourth consecutive state championship and their 14th overall, a record that speaks volumes about the program’s consistency and excellence.
Regular Season and Early Playoff Dominance
Marion Local’s 2024 campaign has been nothing short of spectacular. They opened the season with a 45-6 win over Linton-Stockton (IN), followed by blowout victories against Franklin, and a shutout win against the highly competitive Coldwater team. Their defense has been nearly impenetrable, and their offense, led by a powerful running game, has steamrolled opponents.
In the playoffs, Marion Local faced tough challenges, but their experience and talent proved too much for teams like Minster (49-7), Delphos St. John’s (35-14), and Fort Recovery (45-13). In the state semifinal against an upstart New Bremen team, the Flyers cruised to a 49-14 victory, showing their ability to dominate in all facets of the game.
Here’s a revised version including the part about Marion Local beating Coldwater and emphasizing the significance of the game:
Marion Local’s victory over Coldwater on October 18th, 2024, was not just another win—it was one of the biggest games in the state this season. With both teams entering the game undefeated, this matchup was a battle for supremacy, not just in the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) but in Ohio high school football as a whole.
Marion Local came out on top with a dominant 38-7 victory, extending their perfect season and asserting their status as one of the most formidable teams in the state. Coldwater, known for their resilience and championship pedigree, fought hard, but Marion Local’s depth, speed, and experience proved to be too much to handle.
This rivalry has long been one of the most anticipated in Ohio football, with both teams having numerous state titles under their belts. For Marion Local, this victory was a statement win—solidifying their quest for another state championship while reinforcing their legacy as a powerhouse in Ohio high school football. For Coldwater, despite the loss, the game showcased the competitive nature of the program and their continued place among the elite in the state.

Hunter St. John: A powerful running back who consistently gains positive yardage, St. John has been the backbone of the Flyers’ offense. His bruising runs wear down defenses and control the clock.
The Offensive Line: Marion Local’s offensive line is often referred to as one of the best in the state. They have dominated in the trenches, opening up massive holes for the running backs and providing ample protection for Miller.
Playoff Highlights
State Semifinal vs. Columbus Grove(49-14): Marion Local’s defense shut down Columbus Grove’s potent offense, while their running game racked up yards and touchdowns. Miller’s efficiency and the running back committee’s success led to another easy victory for the Flyers.
Regional Final vs. Fort Recovery (45-13): The Flyers’ offensive juggernaut rolled through Fort Recovery, led by St. John’s 150-yard, two-touchdown performance. Their defense stifled any offensive threat from the Indians, proving once again that they are a complete team.
Legacy and History
Marion Local’s legacy is built on a foundation of hard work, discipline, and a relentless commitment to excellence. Hillsdale Reaches First-Ever Final Four with Dominant Win Over Cuyahoga Heights

Orrville, Ohio – The Hillsdale Falcons made school history Friday night, advancing to their first Final Four with a commanding 44-14 victory over Cuyahoga Heights in the regional final. The Falcons showcased a high-powered offense and a stout defense, leaving no doubt about their place among the state’s elite.

The game started with a bang, as quarterback Kale Lewis connected with Hayden McFadden for a 30-yard touchdown pass with 8:18 remaining in the first quarter, putting Hillsdale ahead 7-0. Shortly after, Cuyahoga Heights fumbled on an option play, and Hillsdale capitalized immediately. Owen Sloan, the team’s workhorse all season, punched in a 4-yard touchdown run—his 26th of the year—extending the lead to 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Sloan wasn’t done yet. He added another touchdown before the quarter ended, giving Hillsdale a commanding 21-0 lead. Cuyahoga Heights managed to find the end zone early in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 21-7.

In the third quarter, Hillsdale put the game out of reach. Lewis found McFadden again for a touchdown, and the two-point conversion—a pass from Lewis to Holland Young—was good. With 6:42 left in the third, the Falcons led 37-7, triggering a running clock.

Stars of the Gridiron: Ryan Bee, A Hillsdale Legend
Standing tall as a force on both sides of the football field, Ryan Bee’s journey from Hillsdale High School in Ashland County, Ohio, to the NFL is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and sheer talent. A legend in his hometown of Jeromesville, Bee carved out a legacy that transcended local football and took him to the professional ranks.
In high school, Bee was a dominant presence at Hillsdale, earning statewide recognition for his outstanding performances. As a junior in 2012, he recorded 66 tackles, 11 sacks, and three forced fumbles, earning third-team All-Ohio honors in Divisions V-VI. But it was during his senior season in 2013 that Bee cemented his legacy. He tallied 88 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, and forced eight turnovers, while also showcasing his versatility by catching 20 passes for 250 yards and eight touchdowns. His all-around play earned him first-team All-Ohio Division VI recognition, and he served as the captain for both the football and basketball teams.
Bee’s performance on the gridiron attracted attention beyond Ohio. Rated a two-star prospect by Rivals, he received an offer from Washington and was in contact with Bowling Green, Toledo, and West Virginia. However, Bee chose to take his talents to Marshall University, where he played for the Thundering Herd from 2015 to 2018.
At Marshall, Bee’s impact was immediate. After redshirting his freshman year in 2014, Bee became a cornerstone of the Thundering Herd defense. In 2015, he played in 12 games, starting eight, and racked up 59 tackles, four sacks, and three fumble recoveries, earning Conference USA All-Freshman honors. Bee continued to be a force throughout his collegiate career, starting 10 games in 2016, where he recorded 54 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
His junior and senior seasons were just as impressive. In 2017, Bee led the Thundering Herd in sacks, finishing with 5.5 sacks and 51 tackles, earning second-team All-Conference USA honors. He repeated that performance in 2018 with 4.5 sacks and 36 tackles, solidifying his status as one of the top defensive linemen in Conference USA.
Bee’s stellar college career opened the door to the NFL. After going undrafted in 2019, Bee signed with the Washington Redskins, where he earned a spot on the team’s practice squad. His hard work paid off in November 2019 when he was promoted to the active roster and made his NFL debut against the Detroit Lions. Bee’s NFL journey was marked by highs and lows, as he was waived and re-signed several times but showed resilience through it all. He signed a futures contract with the Redskins in December 2019 and was placed on injured reserve in 2020.
In April 2021, Bee’s NFL journey took him to the Arizona Cardinals, he was waived in July of that year.
From his days as a high school standout at Hillsdale to his college success at Marshall and his stint in the NFL, Ryan Bee’s story is one of perseverance and triumph. He will always be remembered as a true star of the gridiron, representing Hillsdale and Ashland County with pride at every level of the game.
